Therapeutic tutoring: What is it?

Therapeutic tutoring is a new method of combining teaching content with addressing the emotional needs that stop students from reaching their academic potential. A therapeutic tutor knows the math, science, history, or language, and also knows how to help your child plan for success, set goals, increase self-esteem, and manage school successfully. The therapeutic tutor moves seamlessly between education and psychology, meeting the needs of students with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or other issues.

Honora Wall, lead tutor at What the (f)unction, says that this new trend is the key to modern education. "I take a holistic approach to working with students: what is stopping this individual child from doing all they can? Why are they feeling stressed, anxious, or not good enough? We talk about these issues, then we fix those things," she says. "By using scaffolding and combining subject matter content with executive function, goal setting, and meeting emotional needs, the student can realize their potential faster than they believe possible."

Ms. Wall offers her services through virtual tutoring, using Skype, Zoom, or online classrooms-- "Whatever works best for the student is the best tool to use," she says. Email us to schedule your tutoring session and discover how easy it can be to succeed in school.
